CALL ON FARMERS TO TAKE ON COMMERCIAL FORESTRY

Unknown to many, Siaya County produces timber from commercial farm forestry practiced by a number of individuals and cooperates across the County. Over the last two months Siaya tree farmers in Gem, Bondo & Ugunja sub-counties have been earning from their forestry projects with “Timsales Timber”, a timber firm, harvesting mature trees from their farms. The County Government of Siaya supports green growth through the sector of environment & natural resources, by establishing tree nurseries for tree seedling production, woodlots in primary schools, boundary planting in other public places and tree seedling distribution to community members.
The logging from Aggrey Mulumbi’s farm in Sidindi Ward, Ugunja Constituency in Siaya County (see photo) exemplifies opportunities for community members to turn around the otherwise idle lands into commercial forests according to Siaya County Environment Director Mr. Gabriel Oduong’.
