President Obama’s Visit to Kenya in July 2018

President Obama will travel to Spain and Portugal from July 5-7. On Friday, July 6, he will speak at the 2018 Circular Economy and Innovation Summit in Madrid, Spain. That afternoon, he will travel to Porto, Portugal for a moderated conversation at the Climate Change Leadership Porto 2018 Summit before returning to Madrid.

Later in the month, President Obama will travel to Kenya from July 15-16 and to South Africa from July 16-19.

In Nairobi, he will meet with President Uhuru Kenyatta. He will also meet with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

On July 16, President Obama will travel to Alego for the inauguration of the Sauti Kuu Foundation’s Sports, Resource and Vocational Training Centre, where he will deliver brief opening remarks. Sauti Kuu, which stands for “powerful voices,” provides educational, economic and cultural opportunities to help young people change their lives and communities. Due to space constraints, the public’s access to the event will be restricted, and the event will be open to a limited number of credentialed media. President Obama will depart for South Africa later that day and will stay in Johannesburg until July 19. The morning of July 17, he will meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa, and that afternoon, he will deliver the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture. In honor of the centennial of Mandela’s birth, this year’s lecture theme is “Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World.” It is open to press and will be streamed live. On July 18, he will participate in a live-streamed Obama Foundation town hall with the 200 recently selected Obama Foundation Leaders in Africa. President Obama looks forward to meeting these emerging leaders for the first time, hearing about the extraordinary work they are doing across Africa, and discussing how the Obama Foundation can support their civic leadership development.
